The Animatrix is a collection of several animated short films, detailing the backstory of the "Matrix" universe, and the original war between man and machines which led to the creation of the Matrix. Anthology of nine short anime (Japanese animation) films tied in to the 1999 blockbuster "The Matrix" and its sequels. "Final Flight of the Osiris": The crew of the hovercraft Osiris attempt to warn their city of an imminent attack. "The Second Renaissance, Parts 1 & 2": The story behind the war between man and the machines, how mankind scorched the sky, and the creation of the Matrix. "Kid's Story": A teenager is contacted by Neo, and manages to escape the Matrix. "Program": Two warriors battle in a samurai training simulation when one decides to betray his crewmates and re-enter the Matrix. "World Record": A champion sprinter manages to break free of the Matrix by sheer physical effort during a record attempt. "Beyond": A young girl searching for her cat discovers a haunted house caused by a glitch in the system. "A Detective Story": Private investigator Ash tracks a hacker named Trinity through the looking glass. "Matriculated": A group of humans capture a machine scout and insert it into a 'human matrix'. The 9 segments that comprise Animatrix can be thematically divided into 3 groups. Group 1 is a 2-part historical excursus regarding the creation of A.I. and an army of robot workers, their fight for their rights, and their eventual showdown with their former human masters. Group 2 deals with events taking place in our future, on the scorched surface of the Earth and thereabouts, involving the human survivors and the now-dominant robots. Group 3 - arguably the most interesting and creative - deals with various microscenarios taking place inside the illusory world of the Matrix.

If you're like me, you admire the motion picture The Matrix, and detest the shallow cash-grabs that are its two repulsively primitive and conceptually throw-way sequels. The Animatrix, unlike the two disgusting piles of CG kungfu garbage that are these sequels, is a magnificent anime anthology, with most of the key work done by some of the most brilliant Japanese masters in the field.

I want to single out "Beyond", written and directed by Koji Morimoto, as my favorite piece from the bunch. It's actually difficult to pick one, but Beyond is just too dazzling visually, intoxicating viscerally, and beautiful in every aspect. It is a very simple story about a glitchy urban area of the Matrix, with a bunch of kids having a blast with the altered and shaky rules of gravity, and reality in general. The genius is in how immersive and mesmerizing the segment is, placing you alongside the protagonists as they bathe in sunlight and bounce on the asphalt, enjoying the dash of magic suddenly presented to them by the previously-familiar city. Together with Morimoto's piece "Dimension Bomb" from the Genius Party anthology, this is maybe my favorite ever piece of animation.

On a slight downside, The Second Renaissance segment, chronicling the robot uprising, has a somewhat infantile and implausible storyline. It looks gorgeous, - as does all of The Animatrix, - but story-wise, it's difficult to take TSR very seriously. So if I have any complaints about this fantastic collection, it's that the plot of The Second Renaiisance could have used a little more work.

9/10; very highly recommended. First off, I have to emphasize that I love 'The Matrix', the movie. But these shorts only bored me and at times even tended to get on my nerves.

Why? Because it's all eyecandy and no substance. These shorts don't add anything to 'The Matrix'. On the contrary. After the fourth or fifth variation on the theme, the whole concept gets very old (nothing is like it seems, reality vs. virtual reality, the evil machines, etc.) In fact, by repeating everything over and over and by trying to 'explain' everything, these shorts manage to destroy all the mystery and uniqueness that made 'The Matrix' so special.

Furthermore, these shorts are bursting with spectacular camera movements, cool sound effects, and non-stop action. But that's not a good thing. Because here again the problem is that repetition and the overuse of these elements is counter-productive. It's like a small child telling the same joke over and over again: You might be amused the first time you hear the joke. But the n-th time you have to endure the same lame joke, you just wish the kid would shut up.
